SparkFun TOL-11784 Third Hand Kit

Are you frustrated with the lack of dexterity from most third hands? The SparkFun Third Hand gives you the ability to hold a board between two alligator clips on two flexible arms with multiple points of articulation. The arm’s wide range of articulation gives you access to any angle of the board that you are currently working on, making soldering that much easier. The SparkFun Third Hand also won’t move around while you work thanks to a heavy aluminum base supporting the arms.

Even though we give you two alligator clips for the flex arms, that shouldn’t restrict their functionality to just holding a PCB. Add an LED for better lighting, a fan to keep solder fumes out of your face, or a magnifying glass to get an up close and personal look at what you are working on.

Having issues removing the end part to fit the clip? try a little heat, a bowl of hot water should help.

Note: For assembly instructions watch the product video below.

  • 1x Aluminum Base Plate

  • 2x Alligator Clips

A footnote to my post on 6th April…
Having managed to get the ‘nozzles’ off the flex-arms and then fitted the croc clips, I was unable to push the ‘nozzles’ back on to the flex-arms – even tried cooling one part with a freezer spray to ‘shrink’ it !
After a few minutes pause for reflection and cursing, the answer came to me – use Superglue !
    Result – happiness.

Certainly a great idea and much better than the smaller old unit with small black base and short arms as shown in the video.
However, I’d go a bit further than the previous reviewer in terms of describing setting it up – it’s a PIG !! Nowhere near as easy as is demonstrated by the guy in the video – be prepared for minor injuries.
One of the arms on my unit refuses to separate at the orange ‘nozzle’ – it want to separate one ‘ball joint’ back from there all the time and so it’s not possible to remove the orange nozzle.
Fortunatley I bought an extra arm so I’ve still got two to struggle and force back into the base….

I love the convenience of this. It is a little tricky to get it set up however, once assembled it is great. Very sturdy!
