What is an Actuator?
The term actuator refers to a component of a machine that is responsible for moving a mechanism or part of a system. An example would be opening and closing a safety valve. An actuator requires a control signal and a source of energy. The control signal can be low energy and depending on the type of actuator, it could be electric voltage, pneumatic, or hydraulic fluid pressure. When an actuator receives a control signal, it responds by converting the source's energy into mechanical motion. In the electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic sense, it is a form of automation or automatic control.
