Triple-axis Magnetometer

Triple-axis smart digital magnetometer that detects the strength and direction of a magnetic field and communicates the x, y and z components directly to a computer via RS232/485. Field range is +/- 2 gauss with a resolution of 67 microgauss.

Proto-Pic have MLX90393 is a wide range magnetic field sensor, that can measure 16-bits in ranges from ±5mT up to ±50mT in all 3 axes. Compared to most magnetometers, this gives a huge range, which makes it excellent for detecting magnets and magnetic orientation, rather than the Earth's magnetic field.

Hall Effect Sensor

Hall effect sensor is a type of sensor which detects the presence and magnitude of a magnetic field using the Hall effect. Proto-Pic has US1881 which is an integrated Hall effect latching sensor. Similar to a reed sensor, simply hold a magnet near the sensor to toggle. This makes for a robust presence sensor and is a smaller, lower-cost option to a reed sensor. A hall effect sensor can also handle less current than a reed switch. The device includes an on-chip Hall voltage generator for magnetic sensing, a comparator that amplifies the Hall voltage, and a Schmitt Trigger to provide switching hysteresis for noise rejection, and open-collector output. An internal bandgap regulator is used to provide temperature compensated supply voltage for internal circuits and allows a wide operating supply range.
