Rotary Encoder
Rotary Encoder
Rotary Encoder sensors detect position and speed by converting rotational mechanical movements into analogue electrical signals, then encodes them into digital signals.
These sensors are similar to Linear Encoders, except that a linear encoder detects mechanical movement for straight lines as opposed to rotational ones.
Encoders come in two common flavours. Absolute encoders can sense their actual angular position based on internal sensing, and they allow users to obtain digital readings. Incremental encoders don’t sense position directly, but they do send pulses to the controlling hardware as they rotate.
Rotary Encoder devices shouldn’t be confused with potentiometers. Rotary encoders can spin continuously in either direction, whereas potentiometers can only turn a set distance clockwise or counter-clockwise before they need to stop

Rotary Encoder - Illuminated (Red/Green)
Sparkfun
£2.95Rotary Encoder - Illuminated (Red/Green) Rotary encoders are used similarly to potentiometers. They're different from potentiometers in that a Rotary Encoder has full rotation without any limitations. They output gray code so that you can tell how much...£2.95Qty in Cart: 0Price:£2.95Subtotal: -
Rotary Encoder LED Ring Breakout Board - Coloured
£20.95The Rotary Encoder LED Ring is a position indicator for rotary encoders. Traditional knobs with indicator lines do not give accurate representation of an encoder’s value since rotary encoders have no start or end point, therefore this breakout...£20.95 -
Rotary Encoder - Illuminated (RGB)
Sparkfun
£4.95Rotary Encoder - Illuminated (RGB) Rotary encoders can be used similarly to potentiometers. The difference being that an encoder has full rotation without limits (It just goes round and round). They output gray code so that you can tell how much and...£4.95 -
Potentiometer, Rotary, Linear, 10k
Sparkfun
£0.96Potentiometer, Rotary, Linear, 10k An adjustable potentiometer can open up many interesting user interfaces. Turn the pot and the resistance changes. Connect VCC to an outer pin, GND to the other, and the center pin will have a voltage that varies...£0.96Qty in Cart: 0Price:£0.96Subtotal: -
SparkFun COM-09117 Rotary Encoder
Sparkfun
£4.20SparkFun COM-09117 Rotary Encoder This is a 12-step rotary encoder with a nice ‘clicking’ feel. It’s breadboard friendly, and has a pretty handy select switch (by pushing in on the knob). The encoder is different from a potentiometer in...£4.20 -
