Looking for a STEM project ideas? Look no further...
The next level of difficulty following on from the day of the geek and unigeek badge kits!
Have you built up your Day-of-the-Geek or UniGeek badge kits? Well in that case why not carry on brushing up on your soldering skills? Our lighthouse soldering kit has been designed as a great STEM learning kit to evolve your soldering skills and also learn a little about electronics. The circuit is based on a Multivibrator Circuit, which in this case is made up of two transistors, cross-coupled by resistors to provide a two-state on-off circuit.
Once soldered this will emulate an Isophase lighthouse but fear not all you lovers of Occulting lighthouses by changing the value of the resistors you can change the flashing pattern.
A fabulous addiition to any Birthday, Christmas, Haloween or just because gifting for a child (or adult!) who loves super cool and fun projects!
Lighthouse Assembly:
This STEM kit will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to assemble with only basic soldering skills and equipment. Proto-Pic designed these kits so that anyone from 7 and upwards can build them, although young people should always be supervised when using Soldering Irons. Because these can be or at least should be very HOT!!!
Our PCB is in 2 parts. The main PCB is where you solder the 11 components, and then the base PCB slots into the bottom of the lighthouse with a couple of blobs of solder. Consequently, your lighthouse has a strong and stable stand.
Required Tools:
- CR2032 Battery
- Soldering Iron
- Solder
- Pliers
- Flush cutters
- Eye protection, because flying legs can hurt!
Lighthouse Kit Contains:
- 1 x 220 ohm resistor ( Red, Red, Black)
- 1 x 82k ohm resistor (Grey, Red, Orange)
- 2 x 220k ohm resistors (Red, Red, Yellow)
- 1 x White LED
- 2 x 2N3904 NPN Transistors
- 1 x Power switch
- 1 x CR2032 battery holder (battery not included)
- 2 x 10uF Capacitors
- 1 x Lighthouse PCB
- 1 x Stand PCB

A lovely kit suitable for children aged 9 or 10 upwards. Myself and my son had a lot of fun soldering this kit and he has something 'real' to show for his work. Very happy. :)

An excellent kit, but it could be further improved with more details in the guide:
1) a circuit diagram
2) Type, part number, of transistors
and Value of the capacitors in the component list.
It would be nice to have an explanation of how the isophase duty cycle is achieved.
For a beginner in soldering it should also mention:
3) say that it needs flux cored solder
4) need to keep the tip clean and shiny with a damp sponge or brass wool (If these are covered elsewhere then I apologise for not realising that):
