These DIP Sockets are perfect for prototyping. And come in an array of different sizes(8, 14, 16, 18, 28, and 40). This one is a 300mil wide 8-pin socket.
It is always recommended to mount your chips in a socket rather than soldering direct to a PCB, as this makes it easier should you need to replace the chip.
